Do you feel exhausted and tired even after you’re well rested? Are you dealing with never-ending acne problems? Do you feel bloated every time you consume a meal? All these signs indicate that your body may have toxins and needs an internal cleansing.

In today’s fast-paced world, maintaining internal cleanliness is as crucial as external hygiene. Our body constantly works to eliminate toxins, but an unhealthy lifestyle, stress, and poor dietary habits can hinder this natural detoxification process. When toxins accumulate, our body signals the need for internal cleansing through various symptoms. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, offers holistic detoxification techniques to restore balance and well-being.

Warning Signs of Internal Toxin Build-up

To understand how to identify if your body is unclean within and how to cleanse it, OnlyMyHealth team spoke to Dr Anay Davare, MD (Ayurved) from Siddhant Ayurvedic and Panchkarma Clinic, Dombivli, Thane. He explains, “We live in today's modern era full of facilities and new technologies, which help us ease our work. However, our fast and busy lifestyles, lack of exercise, and unhealthy diets are decreasing the quality of life, leading to various diseases.”

Ayurvedic texts describe three stages of toxin accumulation: Bahudosh (excessive toxin build-up), Madhyadosh (moderate toxin accumulation), and Alpadosh (mild toxin accumulation). When toxins accumulate beyond the body's capacity to eliminate them, symptoms arise, including:

  • Respiratory issues: Frequent colds, congestion, allergies

According to Dr Davare, “If you experience persistent symptoms such as indigestion, obesity, body odour, excessive sleepiness, or chronic fatigue, your body is signalling the need for detoxification.”

According to Dr Davare, “Ayurveda follows the principle of Swasthasya Swasthya Rakshanam Aturasya Vikara Prashamanam Cha, which means maintaining health in the healthy and treating diseases in the ill.” To ensure internal cleanliness, Dr Davare recommends Panchakarma, a deep detoxification process comprising five purification techniques:

  • Vaman (Therapeutic Vomiting): Recommended for conditions like chronic cough, asthma, skin disorders (psoriasis, acne), obesity, and indigestion.
  • Virechan (Purgation Therapy): Effective for skin diseases, piles, liver disorders, and excessive heat conditions.
  • Basti (Medicated Enema): Useful for arthritis, paralysis, infertility, and spinal disorders.
  • Nasya (Nasal Therapy): Helps in chronic sinusitis, migraines, hair fall, and improving sensory organ functions.
  • Raktamokshana (Bloodletting Therapy): Beneficial for skin diseases, high toxicity conditions, and circulatory disorders.

Dr Davare highlights, “These Panchakarma treatments should be performed under the guidance of an Ayurveda expert. Specific therapies are recommended based on an individual’s condition, and they also align with seasonal changes.”

Apart from Panchakarma, Ayurveda advocates simple daily practices to aid detoxification:

  • Follow a Sattvic Diet: Consume fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and herbal teas. Avoid processed and junk food.
  • Hydration is Key: Drink warm water with lemon in the morning to flush out toxins.
  • Incorporate Herbal Remedies: Herbs like Triphala, Neem, and Aloe Vera help cleanse the digestive system.
  • Engage in Regular Exercise: Yoga and Pranayama enhance circulation and toxin elimination.
  • Oil Pulling: Swishing coconut or sesame oil in the mouth every morning helps remove toxins.
  • Adequate Sleep: Quality sleep allows the body to repair and detoxify naturally.
  • Stress Management: Meditation and deep breathing techniques reduce stress-induced toxin build-up.

When to Seek Professional Help

If symptoms persist despite following a healthy lifestyle, consult an Ayurvedic practitioner for a personalised detox plan. Certain detox therapies are not recommended for children, elderly individuals, pregnant women, or those with severe health conditions.

Dr Davare emphasises, “Our body constantly gives us warning signs when it is overloaded with toxins. Recognising these symptoms and opting for Ayurvedic detoxification methods can significantly improve our overall health and longevity.” By understanding and addressing these internal imbalances, we can maintain a vibrant, disease-free life, ensuring that our body remains cleansed and well-functioning.
